Among the headliners of the 2023 edition, Nubiyan Twist brings hip-hop, jazz, soul and afrobeat rhythms to Bucharest Jazz Festival. Selected by David Byrne to play at the prestigious Queen Elizabeth Hall and acclaimed at Glastonbury, Shambala or Edinburgh Jazz Festival, Tom Excell guitarist and producer’s band has the reputation of explosive live performances, which combine the sound of wind instruments with powerful female voices, mc’ing, live dubs and reggae rhythms, soul, jazz, Latin and dance. Comprised of musicians, DJs and producers, the artistic collective Nubiyan Twist is renowned for the “pure joy of co-creating a unique experience on stage that is downright contagious” (Gigwise).

UK’s leading light in Afro-Jazz, the group creates a unique, infectious sound in an eclectic mix of styles, drawing on jazz, hip-hop, afrobeat, latin, soul, reggae and dance music. Their debut album received strong support across the Jazz, World music and Hip-hop press, with support from sources as diverse as Huey Morgan, David Rodigan, Craig Charles, The Independent, Songlines, Afropunk and SBTV. This was followed up with „Siren Song” in May 2016. Their records see collaborations with some of the greatest African musicians of all time, Mulatu Astatke and Tony Allen. As well as working with UK vocalists Cherise, Ego Ella May, Ruby Wood and Ria Moran.
